ADUs go by many names including granny flats, in-law units, room additions, garage conversions, and backyard homes. There are many different options when it comes to ADUs and we are here to help you find the best adu designs suitable for your home. 

First, it is important to figure out the goal of your ADU. Is the main objective to increase your living space for family members or something you’re looking to rent out and earn monthly income? 

The time it will take to build an ADU will depend on if you are converting an existing part of the residence or doing new construction. The following are the types of ADUs in Los Angeles County and Southern California:

• Interior ADU – These are built inside the primary residence, often in the basement or attic conversion, located within the existing home. Also known as a home conversion

• Detached ADU – A standalone unit that’s built on the property, independent from the primary residence and usually located within the backyard.

• Attached ADU – These are connected or attached to the existing home by at least one wall, serving as an addition to your current primary structure.

• Junior Accessory Dwelling Unit (JADU)– An ADU that is no more than 500 square feet in size and that must be a part of the existing structure. These units may share bathrooms with the primary residence and only need to meet “efficiency kitchen” requirements.

What’s the difference between an Accessory Dwelling Unit and a Room Addition? An ADU serves as its own stand-alone home. It includes requirements necessary to live in such as a kitchen, bathroom, bed, and living space.

A room addition is when the home’s main residential structure is expanded and increased in square footage. This could include adding a second story to a home or increasing the size of a kitchen, bathroom, or any other room within the residence.

For ground-up construction, blueprints with exact measurements will need to be created. The design and permit process will be the most tedious as the correct paperwork needs to be filled out to submit to the city.

After permit plans are approved, it’s time to start the building process. We will provide you with 3D renderings to make sure your ideas have been well communicated.
